Soundtrack Saturday – The Last Unicorn by Peter S Beagle

September 24, 2011

Soundtrack Saturdays an opportunity to share a song I think would fit on the soundtrack for the book I’m currently reading.

Feel free to join in! Either leave your soundtrack pick or the link to your soundtrack post in the comments.

From the publisher’s website:
“The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone. She was very old, though she did not know it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam, but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. But her eyes were still clear and unwearied, and she still moved like a shadow on the sea…”

Soundtrack Song: “Longing To Belong” by Eddie Vedder
“The moon had moved away from the window, but Prince Lír could see that the dark room was no darker for that. The cool brightness of the Lady Amalthea grew more slowly than had Mabruk’s wind, but the prince understood quite well that it was far more dangerous. He wanted to write poems by that light, and he had never wanted to write poems before.” (p. 173)

If Prince Lír did write poems and songs for Lady Amalthea, I think they would sound an awful lot like “Longing To Belong.” But with more references to slaying dragons and climbing mountains and vanquishing black nights in her honour.

And when the time is right, I hope that you’ll respond
Like when the wind gets tired, the ocean becomes calm
I may be dreaming but I’m longing to belong
To you

Ok did we talk about The Last Unicorn at book club? Because I was noodling around the library (as one does when one is going out of town for two weeks and should really not be grabbing any more books) and I saw it and was like, This rings a thing in my brain. So I picked it up. We DID talk about it, right? I refuse to believe in this weird coincidence otherwise.

Yes we did! It’s one of my most favourites and an ultimate comfort read. So, you’d better like it, okay? ;)

    Wow. What a beautiful song.

That Eddie. The older he gets the more handsome he gets.

Oooo that “longing to belong to you…” so sweet.

A perfect choice! The Last Unicorn is one of those books I really need to revisit. I loved it, but it’s been far too long.

Thanks! I know, I can’t remember the last time I read The Last Unicorn before this re-read, but it’s one of my all time favourites.

This is the second post I’ve seen about this book this week. Maybe I need to add it to my list… :-)

You can’t ignore a sign like that ;) But yes, you should definitely read it!

I really like this song. Now, I am even more curious about The Last Unicorn. I do have the book sitting on my shelf. I will read it, and then hopefully remember to come back to this song.
