The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society Pinky Pact!

September 1, 2010

Now say that 10 times fast.

On Monday I mentioned in my round up post that I have just obtained a copy of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer. I hum’d and haw’d about whether or not I should read it and to my surprise, the comments were unanimous in saying “Yes! Read it!” Sheila, however, took it one step further:

Guernsey is on my shelf waiting to be read yet. Maybe we should just pinky swear to both read it in September and that will get it off the shelf?

Obviously I had to take her up on it. So we’ve made a deal – we’ll both read Guernsey at some point during September. Of course we’re taking this seriously and had to make it official:

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good …er… will read Guernsey.

It seems like there should be some sort of punishment-type thing if one of us doesn’t read it, but we didn’t get that far in the planning. Suggestions? All I can say for now is that I wish I had spent more time in the sun this summer. Woah, Sheila are you tanned!

Edit: Check out Sheila’s pact post!

First of all – this is the funniest thing ever! I think your pinky promise is going to be well worth it because I loved this book – it was one of my favorites of 2009! :) Hope you enjoy!

I love your pinky promise. You will love this book! I didn’t think I’d like it, and it’s one of my all time favorites now. As for punishment if you don’t read it-maybe the one who doesn’t read it has to buy the one who does a book?

thanks for that — funny and made my day. now we need a scissors, paper, rock decision for selecting books. I like GLAPPPS — reminding me a little of 84 Charing Cross Road.

…maybe we end our challenge with the book review, AND we have to make – and eat a potato peal pie… (I haven’t read the book yet – I don’t even know if that is an actual pie…….) LOL

    That’s fun!

A pinky swear is a great way to start this book. I don’t want to be a spoiler but you may recognize a theme of commitment in the various story lines.

    You’ll love it.

    I promise.

Good luck you guys! Maybe if one of you don’t finish the book, you have to give the other one a new book? :-)

Mel – Join in! There’s always room for more in a pinky pact :)

LR – Thanks! I’m getting so excited to read it!

Colette – Oh, I like that idea!

Barbara – Ha! Yes, rock, paper, scissors is the next step – already do use to pick my next read :)

Bookjourney – Jeepers, I don’t want to be punished for actually reading the book! ;) But I did find a recipe:

    Daryln – Thanks!

Mom – Really? Well it’s good to know we’re already off to a good start in getting into the book and we haven’t even started it yet!

Vasilly – Thanks! Yeah, I really like that idea of a punishment :)

LOL Karoline – I think Alita looks like she is pinky swearing…. I may be questionable – but seriously it is a pinky swear :D

Not a punishment exactly, but what if the person who doesn’t read it has to read one book of the person who did read it’s choosing. (The grammar in that sentence is fuzzy…)
