Soundtrack Saturday – Watership Down
Soundtrack Saturdays is a little thing where I share a song with you that I think would fit on the soundtrack for the book I’m currently reading. Feel free to join in!
Current Read: Watership Down by Richard Adams
One Sentence Summary: Fearing impending danger, a bunch of rabbits flee their home warren and overcome obstacles to set up their own home.
Soundtrack Song: “Winding Road” by Bonnie Somerville, from the Garden State soundtrack.
Why I chose this song: These rabbits haven’t had an easy journey. They don’t exactly know where they are going to end up but it’s the hope of establishing a new home that keeps them motivated:
It’s a winding road
I’ve been walking for a long time
I still don’t know where it goes
And it’s a long way home
I’ve been searching for a long time
I still have hope, I’m gonna find my way home
*fun fact: In my Soundtrack Saturday research I found out that Bonnie Somervale is also an actress. You may know her as Mona on Friends.
What song would you add to the Watership Down soundtrack or the soundtrack of the book you’re currently reading?
Thursday Tunes – Stars
Thursday Tunes is hosted by S. Krishna’s Books, which spotlights a different band/artist each week. I’m going to join in once a month to highlight Canadian artists.
My December pick are Canadian indie rock darlings Stars. They released their first album, Nightsongs, in 2001, which started to build some buzz. But it’s Set Yourself On Fire, released in 2004, that is considered their breakout album. It’s chalked full of layered, soaring melodies that will alternately make you want to sway or tap your toes (sometimes both in the same song!). It’s the kind of music that sounds great on record, but you’re never sure will translate well to a live setting. I’ve been to two Stars shows, and both times I’ve been blown away with how great they are live. Given the chance, I would go see them again without a doubt.
Here for your listening pleasure is “Ageless Beauty”, still one of my favourites.
Soundtrack Saturday – According to Jane
Soundtrack Saturdays is a little thing where I share a song with you that I think would fit on the soundtrack for the book I’m currently reading. Feel free to join in!
Current Read: According to Jane by Marilyn Brant
One Sentence Summary: Ellie navigates life and relationships with the voice of Jane Austen advising her.
Soundtrack Song: “Lovefool” by The Cardigans, from the album First Band on the Moon.
Why I chose this song: When it comes to men, Jane has lots of advice for Ellie. But sometimes Ellie just doesn’t want to listen. Sometimes she wants to ignore the warning signs and believe that the man in front of her is The One and that she is inches away from her Happily Ever After. Sometimes she just wants to be a lovefool.
Thursday Tunes – Ash Koley
Thursday Tunes is hosted by S. Krishna’s Books, which spotlights a different band/artist each week. I’m hoping to use these posts as a way to highlight Canadian artists.
This week I want to talk a little bit about Ash Koley, an artist I was introduced to through work, but has easily become on of my absolute favourites this year.
Ash Koley, the band, is a collaboration between Ash Koley and Phil Deschambault. Together they write such wonderfully catchy, quirky pop songs that even someone like me, who has shied away from anything remotely pop-ish for quite a while, has no choice but to embrace them.
Ash and Phil are currently working on an album, but instead of holding the songs to themselves, they have been releasing homemade music videos (which are fantastic!) as the songs take shape. I have so many favourites that I had a hard time picking which song to share with you. In the end I decided to go with their first single, “Don’t Let Your Feet Touch Ground.”
They have many more videos up on myspace and youtube. I so highly recommend checking them out, I don’t think I can say it enough.
Check them out!
Soundtrack Saturday – Ex-mas
Soundtrack Saturdays is a little thing where I share a song with you that I think would fit on the soundtrack for the book I’m currently reading. Feel free to join in!
Current Read: Ex-mas by Kate Brian
One Sentence Summary: 17-year-old Lila is on a journey to find her brother who has run away to save Santa from the effects of Global Warming on the North Pole.
Soundtrack Song: “Sleigh Ride” by Relient K, from the album Let It Snow Baby…Let It Reindeer.
Why I chose this song: A fun, cute Christmas book needs a fun, cute Christmas song to go with it. Last year I listened to this song until I was singing it in my sleep, and plan on doing it again this year.
What song would you add to the Ex-mas soundtrack or the soundtrack of the book you’re currently reading?
Thursday Tunes – Dan Mangan
Thursday Tunes is hosted by S. Krishna’s Books, which spotlights a different band/artist each week. I was so excited when I came across this meme the other day and because I love sharing music! I know, I know, my blog is called AlitaReads. But Alita listens to music, too. Often while reading. And working. And commuting. And eating. And sometimes while sleeping.
I’m hoping to highlight Canadian artists on Thursdays so that it doesn’t overlap too much with my Soundtrack Saturdays feature. Also because there are SO MANY fantastic Canadian artists out there!
First up we have Vancouver’s own Dan Mangan. I was introduced to his singer/songwriter, folky-ish music over 2 years ago, not long after his debut album came out, Postcards and Daydreaming. The song “Journal Of A Narcoleptic” off that album is one of my most favourite songs ever and the most listened-to song on my iTunes. This past year he released his second full-length album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice, which still features Mangan’s gravelly voice but is a bit more upbeat than Postcards. The video for “Robots,” his first single off the new album, just came out, and it’s pretty fantastic.
Soundtrack Saturday – Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married
Soundtrack Saturdays is a little thing where I share a song with you that I think would fit on the soundtrack for the book I’m currently reading. Feel free to join in!
Current Read: Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married by Marian Keyes
One Sentence Summary: A psychic tells Lucy that she will be married in about a year, which sounds great, but Lucy doesn’t even have a boyfriend.
Soundtrack Song: “You Can’t Hurry Love” by The Supremes
Why I chose this song: There’s a scene in the book where Lucy and Daniel are out for Indian food and keep making up songs about the food. Such as:
“What’s this?”
“Vegetable curry.”
“OK. You can’t curry love, you just have to wait.” (p. 479)
The lyrics of the song also fit so well with the story, of being unable to find love. Okay, so that’s the story of most chick lit, but it fits well here as well. Lucy’s really having a hard time of it, and this is just the type of song she’d listen to while curled up under her covers, hiding from the world.
What song would you add to the soundtrack of the book you’re currently reading?
