Soundtrack Saturday – Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Hailsham seems like a pleasant English boarding school, far from the influences of the city. Its students are well tended and supported, trained in art and literature, and become just the sort of people the world wants them to be. But, curiously, they are taught nothing of the outside world and are allowed little contact with it.
Within the grounds of Hailsham, Kathy grows from schoolgirl to young woman, but it’s only when she and her friends Ruth and Tommy leave the safe grounds of the school (as they always knew they would) that they realize the full truth of what Hailsham is.
Soundtrack Song: “Stability” by Death Cab For Cutie
I wanted a song that evoked a mix of nostalgia and melancholy, and Death Cab for Cutie immediately came to mind. I love the lyrics of this song and even the 9 minute outro feels consistent with the feel of the book. There’s something about it, outro and all, that makes me prefer it to the rerecorded, shortened “Stable Song” on Plans.
The gift of memory is an awful curse
With age it just gets much worse

Jenny – Well, I’ll admit that I nearly looked up the song to include it in this post. I won’t admit, though, how many times I’ve assumed that songs in books are fictional only to find out later that they’re real. So when I got to this one I thought, hey maybe this is a real song! Good to know it isn’t ;)

I love this idea of a song to go with the book you are reading. I wanted to read Never Let Me Go as part of Erin’s reading buddies this month but so far I haven’t found the time to get to it. When I do read it, I’m going to make sure I listenb to Daeth Cab for Cutie “Stability”! Great idea.
